Breaking news today told me Mary Tyler Moore had passed at 80 years old. I stopped what I was doing and watched George Stephanopoulos tear up as he detailed the life of an icon.

When Mary threw her cap in the air of the big city of Minneapolis I was about 7 years old. At least that’s when I first remember it. I didn’t fully comprehend the impact of it though, until today. Today I saw it, and started to cry.

That cap, and her positive outlook, combined with her confident smile created a movement. It’s one of those iconic moments that remind you that anything is possible — if you believe.

I am sure the 7 year old me saw that blue wool cap fly in the air as a symbol that I.. Staci Lynn.. could “make it, after all”. Sometimes that is all it takes. That one moment, that one song, that one quote to change our narrative-and change our path.

She meant that for all of us by the way. Thats how cool she was, I know it.

We all, can make- it after all.

RIP Mary Tyler Moore 1936–2017
